Physical Security Funded by Government to Help Protect Shops from Ram Raids
The Government has announced further support implementing physical security options to help Police protect small businesses affected by a spike in ram raids, says Minister of Police Poto Williams.
$6 million from the Proceeds of Crime Fund will be invested in a crime prevention programmed to be managed by the Police. The physical security will include installing bollards and other protection structures.
The funding will enable Police to work closely with vulnerable small retailers to identify effective and practical solutions specific to each site.
Police will look at the range of crime and security risks each each small retailer may face. Fog cannons, security alarms and screens may also be considered.
Ram raids don’t just create physical damage they can also cause serious personal mental health and well-being issues to business owners, staff and families.
Police will establish and manage the programme of funding for small retailer crime prevention.
“Money and assets forfeited under the Criminal Proceeds (Recovery) Act 2009 will go into the Proceeds of Crime Fund. This is exactly what the fund was designed for, to rectify the significant harm such criminal activities cause,” says Justice Minister Kris Faafo.
